Elkridge is likely the oldest settlement in the county built along the Patapsco River which is no longer navigable, but offers some scenic attractions separating Howard and Baltimore County.
The history of Elkridge is like that of many settlements from the 1800s. Tobacco ruled and farmers used the "Elk Ridge" landing to ship their crops to England. Farmers packed the tobacco, hauled it by mule to the wharves at the landing.
Iron was also important to the area. The red clay along the Patapsco River offered sufficient iron ore for mining in the early 1600s. Iron manufacturing was viable up through the 1800s. The Elk Ridge Furnace, established in 1750 was important to the area and made Elk Ridge Landing second in importance to the area after Annapolis.
